Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Sheet
  • parchment paper

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¼ cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • Red food coloring (optional)
  • Granulated sugar (for coating)

Instructions

Make the Mint Dough

  • Cream the butter and milk: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sweetened condensed milk until smooth and fluffy.
  • Add the powdered sugar: Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing until well incorporated. The dough will thicken as you add the sugar.
  • Stir in peppermint extract: Add the peppermint extract and a pinch of salt. Stir well to combine, creating a creamy mint-flavored dough.

Shape the Mints

  • Divide the dough: Split the dough into two portions. For a two-tone effect, add a few drops of red food coloring to one portion and mix until the desired color is achieved.
  • Roll the dough: Roll the dough into small balls, about 1 teaspoon each.
  • Shape the mints: Gently press each ball into small discs, or leave them as rounded shapes. These will be the signature form of the mints.

Coat with Sugar

  • Roll in granulated sugar: Lightly roll each mint in granulated sugar. This will give them a lovely shimmer and an extra burst of sweetness.

Set the Mints

  • Let the mints firm up: Place the mints on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let them set at room temperature for about 1 hour, or until firm.

Store and Serve

  • Storage: Once the mints are firm, transfer them to an airtight container for storage. They can be kept at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  • Serve and Enjoy: Serve these soft, buttery mints at your holiday gatherings or give them as gifts to share the holiday cheer!

Notes

Customize the colors, use a cookie press for shaping, and adjust peppermint extract for more flavor.
