  • 2 cans (14.5 oz each) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) kidney beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) pinto beans drained and rinsed
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

How to Make Chili Recipe

  • Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Sauté onions until translucent, about 5 minutes, then add garlic and bell peppers until fragrant.
  • Add ground beef to the pot, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until completely browned and no pink remains, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Add chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, and cayenne to the beef mixture. Stir constantly for 1 minute to toast the spices and release their flavors.
  • Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and beef broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and let it simmer.
  • Add kidney beans and pinto beans to the pot. Simmer uncovered for 45-60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until chili reaches your desired thickness.
  • Taste and adjust seasonings with salt, pepper, or additional chili powder. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow flavors to settle.

Notes

The secret to flavorful chili is browning the meat properly and toasting your spices before adding any liquid. Take the time to really brown the beef until caramelized for enhanced flavor.
